Plot

Barney with a gang at MacLaren told them that they would help him move his mother's belongings from his childhood home. Despite their protests, he convinces them and they meet Barney's mother, Loretta, and brother, James, at home on Staten Island. They found evidence of his lonely childhood, covered by Loretta's lies. Lily finds a basketball jersey, and Barney tells the gang that she's asked by the coach to quit the team because she's too good. James supports Barney; but when he's out of earshot, tells them that Barney is horrible, but their mother masks it with the story. James was lied to a white glove sent from Michael Jackson for his 10th birthday. Barney accepted the fantasy, until he and his brother found a letter not sent to "Sam Gibbs," with their photo, with the words "your son" behind.

The gang heads to the address. An older black man answered the door. James realizes that Sam is his father, and both hugs, crying. But Barney joined the hug, under the impression that this man was his father. He then proceeded to the idea that he was an African-American. Back at her mother's house, Barney sits in her room with Loretta who gives her a note for her father's identity. Barney collected all the work her mother did for her as a child. Barney tore up the note and realized that he was the father he would need.

Robin tells Ted that he has promoted him to a make-up artist at work, but when he explains his selling point, Ted worries that he's selling too much to him. He sends a series of text messages to try to balance this carelessness, which Ted gets upset about because he believes things Robin's comments are too terrible. Robin received a message from the woman who said he was still interested in meeting Ted. Ted then asks Robin why she still wants to meet him after all the bad things that Robin has told him and realize that Robin is likely to have sold her to him.

Critical response

Donna Bowman from The A.V. Club gives episode A-score. He says that while the episode has no real innovation apart from repeated characters and meeting relatives for the first time, Barney's acceptance of the truth will not be long. He also notes how Barney joins the duet between James and his father. James Poniewozik of Time.com notes Barney's attempt to feel like a black person in connection with Sam and James is similar to the behavior of Navin Johnson, the character of Steve Martin in The Jerk. . Robert Canning of IGN gave the 6.5 rating episode of 10. DeAnn Welker of Television Without Pity gave the episode C score, saying there is not much storyline for the other four main characters.
