src: i.ytimg.com

Cold cream is a particular water and fat emulsion, usually including beeswax and various aroma agents, designed to smooth the skin and remove makeup. Emulsions are a type of "water in oil" unlike the type of "oil in water" emulsion of vanishing cream, so called because it seems to disappear when applied to the skin. The name "cold cream" comes from the cold feeling that the cream leaves the skin. Variations of products have been used for almost 2000 years.

Cold cream is mainly used for skin care (such as face mask or lip balm), because of its moisturizing properties. It can also be used to remove makeup and as a shaving cream.

History

The discovery of cold cream is credited to Galen, a physician in the 2nd century Greece. Account 1857 is related:

The modern formula for cold cream, however, is very different from that given in Galen's works, at the point of smell and quality, albeit substantially the same - fat and water. In fragrances there are several types of cold cream, distinguished by their odors, such as camphor, almonds, violets, roses, etc.

In France, this substance is still known as caÃÆ' Â © rat de Galien ('Candle Galen'). A copy of London Dispensatory , edited by Nicholas Culpeper and published in 1650 included the following formula for this substance:

Take a four ounce white candle, rose oil omphacine pound; melt in a double vessel, then powr out into another, with the degree of placing in cold water, and often powring out from one ship to the other, stirring until it becomes white; last of all wash it with rose water, add a little rose water and rose vineger.

A 1814 poem credited to "Dr. Russell" gives the following explanation of the benefits associated with the cold cream of the day:

WHEN THE COLD POT COLD TO THAT YOU SEND,

You with words for this purpose, your present reward; Whoe'er with this cream should face his face,
All redness and roughness will disappear,
And skin becomes a dazzling miracle; If acne appears, this will take them away If smallpox should mark you, the signs will rot; If wrinkled by age, or a bad dawbing in the face,
'Twill is smooth in trice, like the best Venetian glasses are,
All this, and much more (can i take the time to write it,
Or my pen is moving that fast, because your lips will trigger it) You affirm your cream: and I will not misuse it,
But pray tell me one thing - Do you use it yourself?

Modern formulation

Cold cream now replaces olive oil with mineral oil or other oils, which are cheaper and slower to damage, as well as alcohol, glycerine, and lanolin. Beginning in the 1970s, jojoba oil became a common ingredient, used as a substitute for sperm oil from whales. Another common ingredient in modern cold cream is borax, which is also responsible for the whiteness of cold cream. The cold cream brands sold widely in the United States include Pond's and Noxzema.

Over the centuries, new uses have been found for products: "As a toilet it takes a cold cream that is used to soften and cool the skin after sunburn, as a cleansing cream, to relieve the rigors of the skin, etc.".
