D (named dee ) is the fourth letter of the modern English alphabet and the basic Latin Latin alphabet.

History

Semitic letters may come from logograms for fish or doors. There are many Egyptian hieroglyphs that might inspire this. In Semitic, Ancient Greek and Latin, the letter represents /d/; in the Etruscan alphabet the letter is redundant but still preserved (see letter B). The equivalent Greek letter is Delta,?.

The very small form (lower case) of 'd' consists of a high vertical loop and stroke. This is developed by the gradual variation in the form of magi (capital). In handwriting, it is common to start an arc to the left of the vertical stroke, resulting in a serif at the top of the arc. This serif is extended while the rest of the letter is reduced, resulting in elbow strokes and loops. Slanted strokes slowly develop into vertical strokes.
