The North Shore

North Vancouver Suburbs, British Columbia is a popular spot for mountain biking. The northern edge of Burrard Inlet, is a rugged terrain with paths on many local mountains. This includes Mt. Fromme, Cypress Provincial Park, and Mt. Seymour. Though not considered part of the North Shore, Coquitlam's Eagle Mountain, and Burke Mountain offer similar horseback riding, although access to trails is usually more difficult.

The local mountains have mountain bike paths known for their extremely difficult and dangerous mountain terrains, and the unique building style of the path is born from the need to create a way to successfully climb this field. These traces contain many natural challenges such as falling logs, falling boulders, ravines to jump, etc. This area is home to the old Red Cedar, which when dead and dry, naturally splits into a nearly straight board. The abundance of natural cedar boards provides many of the materials used to create the initial ladders, bridges, and stunts required to negotiate difficult terrain and fallen trees. Thus, most roads also contain manmade obstacles such as thin bridges, "ladders" swinging above the ground, and teeter-boards for climbing. This style of building roads and cycling is sometimes referred to as "North Shore", describing a trace system that incorporates natural and artificial features of the area. One of the most famous of these lines is the CBC (originally the climbing lane). Due to concerns from Metro Vancouver, the North Coast Mountain Bicycle Association is not allowed to perform routine maintenance at the CBC. In general this can not be postponed. What used to be a well-known trace in the world today is a collection of technically damaged technical features and eroded chaos. Another line on the North Shore has seen a large number of revitalizations since 2013 through the NSMBA's adoption plan. Well-executed TAP concepts pair local businesses with trace builders to achieve thousands of track hours.

Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island, though not so well known for mountain biking as the North Shore, offers more trails. They are near the communities of Victoria, Sooke, Duncan, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Comox Valley, Campbell River, Cumberland, Gold River. Victoria has a special Mountain Bike Park called Mount Work - Hartland. (Also known as "the Dump"). This is the Capital District Park and is operated in partnership with the SIMBS (South Island Mountain Bike Society). Excellent footprints, trail marks, and detailed trace maps are available. Parking and washing bikes on site. In early 2015, SIMBS worked with BC Parks to assess the lanes on Partridge Hill near Lake Durance. This is the first step to open an area for multi-use roads.

A series of new footprints that have been open to the public for years locally on the Gold River have just become part of the PBR Grand Prix of Vancouver Island Tour. The Antler Lake and Scout Lake Loops are fast becoming popular rides for mountain bikers on Vancouver Island. It is in such an area that mountain biking becomes fast to experience sports and adventure for all ages.

Burnaby

Mount Burnaby is a pretty popular destination in the lowlands. There are several downhill roads on the Mountain including two black diamonds called Lower Snake and Nicole's Trail, and two blue boxes called Gear Jammer and Poplar. The lower snake comes directly after Gear Jammer, and Poplar leads you to Nicole's trail. There is a cross-country trail that surrounds a mountain called Mel, and the other is called the Trans-Canada line. In addition to the listed trails, there are six known secret paths on the mountain, with large jumps and embankments suitable for experienced riders who are looking for parked park style footprints. One of the hallmarks of Burnaby Mountain is the bus system. After the trip, a five-minute bike ride will take you to the production bus circle. The 145 takes you to the top of the mountain, where you can access all the way along the highway.

Nicole's trail has narrow corners, optional jumps, rock gardens, and skinnies. Gear Jammer is a fine trail with small skinnies, currently closed in June, but still one of the most popular tracks on the mountain. Some secret paths are also located on the mountain. There is one located after the entrance of Gear Jammer as you walk towards the campus.
