Pop-up ads or pop-ups are forms of online advertising on the World Wide Web. A pop-up is a graphical interface display (GUI) viewing area, usually a small window, which suddenly appears ("pops") in the foreground of the visual interface. Pop-up windows containing ads are usually generated by JavaScript that uses cross-site scripting (XSS), sometimes with a secondary payload that uses Adobe Flash. They can also be generated by other security/vulnerabilities in browser security. Pop-ups can be used to show ads.
Variations in pop-up windows, pop-under ads , open a new browser window under the active window. Pop-under does not directly bother users, but it appears when the user closes the closing window, making it more difficult to determine which website makes it.

Pop-up ads came from the Tripod.com website hosting website in the late 1990s. Ethan Zuckerman claims he wrote the code to launch ads in a separate window in response to a complaint of a banner ad being moved. He did not create a pop-up window . Zuckerman later apologized for the unexpected pop-up ads an unexpected has evolved into.

Web development and design technology allows authors to associate any item in a popup with any action, including with a cancel or invisible button. Due to a bad experience and worry about possible damage caused, some users do not click or interact with any item in the pop-up window at all, and may leave the site that generated it or blocked all pop-ups.
Opera is the first major browser to combine tools to block pop-up ads; The Mozilla browser is then repaired by blocking only the pop-ups that are generated when the page loads. In the early 2000s, all major web browsers except Internet Explorer let users block unwanted pop-ups almost completely. In 2004, Microsoft released Windows XP SP2, which added pop-up blocking to Internet Explorer. Most modern browsers provide popup blocking tools; Third-party tools add other features, such as ad filtering.
Users of websites and web apps constantly experience unwanted pop-up ads through their normal interaction with web browsers. Typically, users respond by closing pop-ups via the "close" or "cancel" feature of the pop-up hosting window. Since this is a common response, some authors of pop-up ads rely on this, and create buttons or controls on the screen that look similar to "close" or "cancel" options. When a user selects one of these "cancel cancel" options, however, the button performs unexpected or invalid actions (such as opening a new popup, or downloading unwanted files on the user's system).
Eliminating the pop-up blocker
Hover ads use DHTML to combine banner ads and pop-up windows that appear in front of a browser screen. JavaScript imposes ads on top of web pages in a transparent layer. These ads can appear in various forms. For example, an ad may contain Adobe Flash animations that link to advertiser sites. Ads can also look like normal windows. Pop-up blockers can not block ads as they are part of a webpage, but may be blocked with third-party ad blockers like AdBlock and Adblock Plus, or by using custom style sheets.
URL redirection
URLs are sometimes redirected to ad pages with URL redirects.
The URL is sometimes opened in a new tab and then the content from the old background tab will be replaced with the ad page with URL redirects, the next time it redirects the tab the user uses to the ad tab. Adblock Plus, uBlock and NoScript can not block this redirect.
Technique
"Popup"
- Some types of downloaded content, such as images, free music, and more, can cause pop-ups, and therefore should not be trusted, especially pornographic sites' pop-ups (known as "pornado" or "porn- storm ", as created by John C. Dvorak.) Also, pop-ups sometimes look like ordinary web pages, and site names appear in the search box. Many websites use pop-ups to display information without disturbing the current page. For example, they may provide the additional guidance required when filling out forms on a web page, without causing any loss of information already entered into the form. Most pop-up blockers allow this type of pop-up. Some, however, reload the page, losing any user-entered information.
- Some web-based installers, such as those used by McAfee, use pop-ups to install software.
- In many internet browsers, holding the ctrl key while clicking a link makes it jump over a popup filter.
- Clicking (even accidentally) on a pop-up can open another pop-up ad.
Pop-under ads
Pop-under ads are similar to pop-up ads, but the ad window appears hidden behind the main browser window rather than superimposed in front of it. Because pop-up ads are becoming more widespread and more annoying, often taking the entire computer screen, many users will soon close pop-up ads that appear on the site without seeing it. Pop-under ads do not directly block the appearance of the content, but remain unconscious until the user closes or minimizes the main browser window.
Pop-under ads technology
Pop-under ads involve two JavaScript functions introduced in 1997 with Netscape 2.0B3 browser. Modern web publishers and advertisers use it to create windows in front of a user's screen, load ads, then send them behind the scenes.
Most modern browsers allow window.open to run only when called by a user interaction (eg, mouse click) event handler. Non-interactive calls (time calls, load events, etc.) Go to window.open produces a new window that is blocked.
To bypass this restriction, most pop-under ads trigger on a mouse click event viewer attached directly to a document or document body. This allows catching all mouse click events not consumed by other click event handlers, and calling window.open without being blocked. For example, when a user selects text, a mouse click triggers a mouse click handler attached to a document and an open pop-under using the code above. Note that there are more techniques for bypass call restrictions window.open with "mouse click" hijacking.
Patent controversy
ExitExchange.com filed a patent in 2000 in a pop-under ad section called pop out. After years of controversy and numerous articles on patent pop-unders, patents were granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in April and June 2008. Their respective patent numbers are US. US Patent 7,386,555 and . Patent 7353.229 . Patent 7,386,555 relates to the method of opening pop out of the toolbar or software application on a computing device, while Patent 7353.229 includes the method used to open pop out of embedded scripts found in media files (for example, JavaScript code on web pages).
