Prince Andrew, Duke of York , (Andrew Albert Christian Edward, born 19 February 1960), is a member of the British royal family. He is the third son and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At the time of his birth, he was second in line to the succession of the British throne; as of April 2018 he is seventh.

He held the rank of commander and the rank of honorary Vice Admiral (as of February 2015) in the Royal Navy, where he served as a pilot and instructor of active-duty helicopters and as captain of a warship. He saw active service during the Falklands War, flying on missions including anti-surface wars, Exocet missile baits, and evacuation of victims.

In 1986, Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson; the couple's marriage, the ensuing separation and divorce in 1996 attracted high levels of media coverage. As well as making various official agreements, he served as UK Special Representative for International Trade and Investment until July 2011.

Early life and education

Prince Andrew was born in the Belgian Suite at Buckingham Palace on 19 February 1960, the third child and the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was baptized in the Court Music Room on April 8, 1960 by Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher. He is the paternal grandfather of the father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, who died 16 years before he was born.

Prince Andrew was the first child born of a ruling king since the birth of 1857 Queen Victoria's youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice. Like his older siblings, Andrew was guarded by a nanny, who was in charge of his early education at Buckingham Palace. He was sent to Heatherdown School near Ascot in Berkshire. In September 1973, he entered Gordonstoun, in northern Scotland, where his father and his older brother lived in front of him. While there, he spent six months - from January to June 1977 - participating in an exchange program to Lakefield College School in Canada. He left Gordonstoun in July two years later with A-Level in English, history, economics, and political science. He did not go to university but went to Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

Military services

Royal Navy

The Royal Family announced in November 1978 that Prince Andrew would join the Royal Navy the following year. In December she underwent various sports tests and tests at the Aircrew Selection Center, at RAF Biggin Hill, along with further tests and interviews at HMS Daedalus , and an interview at the Admiralty Interview Board, HMS Sultan During March and April 1979, the prince was enrolled at Royal Naval College Flight, undergoing pilot training, until he was accepted as a training helicopter pilot and signed for 12 years from May 11, 1979. On September 1 of the same year, Prince Andrew was appointed as a cadet, and entered the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. During the 1980s he also took the Royal Arms Commando course.

After fainting from Dartmouth, the prince proceeded to basic flight training with the Royal Air Force at RAF Leeming, and then, basic flight training with the navy at HMS Seahawk, where he learned to fly Gazelle. helicopter. After being given his wings, he moved to more advanced training on the Sea King helicopter, and conducted operational flying training until 1982. He joined the carrier-based squadron, 820 Navy Air Squadron, serving on aircraft carrier, HMS Invincible .

Falklands War

The Falkland Islands, which is a British overseas territory claimed by Argentina, was attacked by Argentina on April 2, 1982, an incident that incited the Falklands War. Invincibility was one of the two operational aircraft carriers available at the time, and, as such, was to play a leading role in the Royal Navy's assembly task force to sail south to reclaim the island- island.

The place of Prince Andrew on board and the possibility of the Queen's son being killed in action made the British Government uneasy, and the Cabinet wanted Prince Andrew to be transferred to the desk job during the conflict. However, the Queen insisted that her son be allowed to remain with her ship. Prince Andrew remains on the Invincible ship to serve as a Sea King co-pilot pilot, flying on missions that include anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare, Exocet missile baits, victim evacuation, transportation, and search and rescue air. He witnessed Argentina's attack on the SS Constantor Atlantic.

At the time of the cessation of the war, Invincible returned to Portsmouth, where the Queen and Prince Philip joined the other families of the crew in welcoming the ship home. The Argentine military government reportedly planned, but did not attempt, to assassinate the prince at Mustique in July 1982. Although he had brief assignments for the Famous HMS, RNAS Culdrose, and the School of Combined Intelligence Services, Prince Andrew remained with Invincible until 1983. The memoir of Commander Nigel Ward, Sea Harrier Over the Falklands, described Prince Andrew as "an excellent pilot and a very promising officer."

After returning from the Falklands War and until his marriage to Sarah Ferguson, Prince Andrew dated actress Koo Stark.

Navy career officer

In late 1983, Prince Andrew was transferred to RNAS Portland, trained to fly the Lynx helicopter, and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on February 1, 1984, in which the Queen appointed him as a personal assistant. Prince Andrew served at HMS as an aviation pilot until 1986, including a placement to the Mediterranean Sea as part of the Standing NRF Maritime Group 2. He attended the Greenwich Staff Staff Lieutenant course. On 23 October 1986, the Duke of York was then transferred to the General Register, enrolled in a four-month helicopter war instructor course at RNAS Yeovilton, and, after graduation, served from February 1987 to April 1988 as helicopter war officer in 702 Squadron Force Sea, RNAS Portland. He also served in HMS Edinburgh as a Watch Officer and Navigation Assistant until 1989, including a six-month placement as part of the Outback 88 exercise to the Far East.

The Duke of York served as the commander of the HAS3 Lynx flight and pilot at HMS Campbelltown from 1989 to 1991, where he also acted as Flight Officer for Preparing the NRF Maritime Group 1 while Campbeltown > was the flagship NATO troop in the North Atlantic from 1990 to 1991. He passed the squadron command exam on July 16, 1991, attended the Staff College, Camberley, the following year, and completed the Army Staff course. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander on 1 February and passed the ship's command exam on March 12, 1992. From 1993 to 1994, Prince Andrew ordered Hunts Hunts class Hunt HMS Cottesmore.

From 1995 to 1996, Duke was dispatched as a Senior Pilot of 815 Naval Air Squadron, then the largest flying unit in the Air Arm Fleet. Its main responsibility is to oversee aviation standards and ensure effective operational capabilities. He was promoted to Commander on 27 April 1999, completing his naval career active in the British Ministry of Defense in 2001, as officer of the Diplomatic Staff Directorate of the Naval Staff. In July of that year, the Duke of York had retired from the Navy's Active List. Three years later, he was appointed Captain of Honor, rather than the substantive Captain's rank, as always. On February 19, 2010, his 50th birthday, he was promoted to Honorary Rear Admiral. Five years later, he was promoted to Vice Admiral of Honor.

Personal life

Relationship with Koo Stark

Prince Andrew met Koo Stark in February 1981, and they were close for two years, before and after his active service in the Falklands War. Tina Brown claims that this is Andrew's only serious love story. In October 1982, they vacation together on the island Mustique. According to Lady Colin Campbell, Andrew is in love, and the queen "is much taken with Koo who is elegant, intelligent, and wise". However, in 1983 they split, under pressures of the press, paparazzi, and palace. In 1997 Andrew became the godfather of Stark's daughter, and by 2015, when Andrew faced accusations from Virginia Roberts over Jeffrey Epstein's connection, Stark came to his defense, stating that he was a good man and he could help to refute the claim.

Marriage to Sarah Ferguson

Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson at Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986. On the same day, the Queen created him Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killyleagh, all titles previously held by his great-grandfather and great-grandfather. Prince Andrew had known Ferguson since childhood; they sometimes meet in polo matches, and re-acquainted at Royal Ascot in 1985.

The couple appeared to have a happy marriage and had two daughters together, presenting an outward appearance in the late 1980s. Her personal qualities look refreshing in the context of the formal protocol that surrounds the Royal Family. However, the frequent journey of the Duke of York due to his military career, as well as attention, is often critical, media attention is focused on the Duchess of York, causing broken bones in marriage. On March 19, 1992, the couple announced plans to split up and do so in a peaceful way. A few months later, the picture appeared in the media of the Duchess tabloids in intimate relations with John Bryan, his financial adviser at the time, effectively ending the reconciliation hopes between Duke and Duchess. The marriage ended in a divorce on May 30, 1996. The Duke of York spoke affectionately to his ex-wife: "We have managed to work together to bring our children in a way that only a few people can afford and I am very grateful to be able to do that."

The couple agreed to share the custody of their two daughters, and the Duchess continued to stay at Duke's house, Sunninghill Park, until 2004, when she moved to the Royal Lodge. In 2003, Richard Kay, in his first gossip column for Daily Mail , confirmed that Duke would marry businesswoman Amanda Staveley. He was reported in The Sunday Telegraph saying, "I will not marry Andrew now or in the future." In 2007, Sarah, Duchess of York, bought Dolphin House, a mansion right beside the Royal Lodge. In 2008, a fire at Dolphin House resulted in Sarah moving to the Royal Lodge, returning home with the Duke of York. Prince Andrew rented the Royal Lodge is for 75 years, with Crown Estate as a landlord, and there is no annual rental fee.

In May 2010, Sarah, Duchess of York, was filmed by a reporter of News of the World claiming that her ex-husband had agreed that if she received Ã, £ 500,000, she would meet with the donor and pass on useful top business contacts. She filmed receiving, in cash, $ 40,000 as a down payment. The Duke troupe firmly denied that he knew the situation. In July 2011, Sarah stated that her millions of pounds of debts had been removed due to her ex-husband's intervention, which she compared with "knight on white charger".

Trading, business, activities, and charity work

Prince Andrew has been the chairman of the Outward Bound Trust since 1999, succeeding his father Duke of Edinburgh. Charity seeks to instill leadership qualities among young people. From 2001 to July 2011, the Duke of York worked with UK Trade & amp; Investment, part of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, as the UK Special Representative for International Trade and Investment. The Post, formerly held by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, involved representing and promoting the UK at various trade fairs and conferences around the world. His suitability for the role was challenged in the House of Commons by Shadow Justice Minister Chris Bryant in February 2011, during the 2011 Libya civil war, arguing that he was "not only a close friend of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, but also... a close friend of smugglers Libyan weapons punished Tarek Kaituni ". Duke is the Protector of the Middle East Association (MEA), the UK's premier organization to promote trade and good relations with the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Iran. Since it ended, Duke continued to support British companies without a special role. Robert Jobson claimed he did this well and wrote, "He is very passionate when dealing with young start-up entrepreneurs and brings them together with successful business on the network and shows events." Andrew is direct and to the point, and his method seems to work. "

Duke is also a Fight for Sight Protector, a charity dedicated to the study of prevention and treatment of blindness and eye diseases, and is a member of the Scout Association. He often tours Canada to perform tasks related to his Canadian military role. Rick Peters, former Commanding Officer of the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada stated that Prince Andrew "is well informed about Canadian military methods."

The Duke of York receives an annuity of £ 249,000 from the Queen. The Sunday Times reported in July 2008 that for "the public role of the Duke of York,... he last year received Ã, £ 436,000 to cover his expenses." On March 8, 2011, The Daily Telegraph reported: "In 2010, the Prince spent 620,000 pounds as a trade envoy, including Ã, Â £ 154,000 for hotels, food and hospitality, and Ã, £ 465,000 for travel. "

While visiting India as part of the Queen's Jubilee in 2012, Andrew became interested in the work of Women's Interlink Foundation (WIF), a charity that helps women acquire income-generating skills. He and his family then started Key to Freedom, a project that tries to "find a route to market for products made by WIF." On September 3, 2012, the Duke of York was among a team of 40 people who tore down the Shard (the tallest building in Europe) to raise funds for the Outward Bound Trust education charity and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.

In 2013, it was announced that Duke became Patron of London Metropolitan University and University of Huddersfield. In July 2015 he was appointed Chancellor of Huddersfield University. In recognition of Duke's entrepreneurial promotion, he was elected Honorary Fellowship at Hughes Hall at the University of Cambridge on May 1, 2018. He became a Protector of Charity in 2003, and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Royal United Services Institute.

In 2014, the Duke of York established the Pitch @ Palace initiative to support entrepreneurs with the amplification and acceleration of their business ideas. Entrepreneurs selected for Pitch @ Palace Bootcamp are formally invited by Duke to attend St. James Palace to convey their ideas and to be associated with potential investors, mentors and business contacts. Duke has also established The Prince Andrew Charitable Trust which aims to support young people in areas such as education and training. He has also established a number of awards including the Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA), a program to develop digital and corporate skills, the Duke of York Award for Technical Education, awarded to gifted youth in technical education, and the Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Award recognize the talent of young people in entrepreneurship. The Duke of York has lent its support to organizations that focus on science and technology by being the patron of Catalyst Inc. and TeenTech. In 2014, Andrew visited Geneva, Switzerland, to promote British science at the celebration of CERN's 60th Anniversary.

Controversy

Alleged comments about corruption and Kazakhstan

As the United Kingdom's Special Trade Representative, the Duke of York travels the world to promote British business. It was revealed in a US diplomatic cable leak that Duke has been reported by Tatiana Gfoeller, the US ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, discussing bribery in Kyrgyzstan and an investigation into al-Yamamah's weapons deal. The Duke, he explained, "is referencing an investigation, then closing, into alleged bribes received by a senior Saudi aristocrat in return for a profitable BAE Systems contract annually to provide equipment and training for Saudi security forces." The delivery continued: "The subject of his mother sitting around the table roared their approval, and then he went on to this reporter, especially from the National Guardian [sic], who poked their noses everywhere, where 'and (probably) make it hard for the English businessmen to do business. "The crowd is practically clapping!"

Earlier in 2010, it was revealed that the father-in-law of Eastern Kazakhstan President-in-Law Kulibayev paid the Duke of York representatives £ 15 million - Ã, Â £ 3 million for the asking price - through an offshore company, to Duke Surrey mansion, Sunninghill Park. Kulibayev often appears in US shipments as one of those people who have collected millions in rich gas-rich Kazakhstan.

In May 2012, it was reported that Swiss and Italian police investigating "private and business relationships" allegedly used for "international corruption" were looking at the "multi-million pound" Enviro Pacific Investments activity for energy companies hoping to deal with Kazakhstan. This belief is believed to have paid Ã, Â £ 6 million against Sunninghill's now abandoned purchase. In response, a spokesman for the palace said: "This is a private sale between two faiths." There is never any irregularity on the part of the Duke of York.

Libby Purves writes in The Times in January 2015: "Prince Andrew easily fascinates when faced with extraordinary wealth and real power He has fallen in love with 'friendship' with evil, corrupt and clever, not only in the US but in Libya, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, wherever. "

In May 2016, a new controversy emerged when the Mail Daily Mail alleged that Duke had mediated an agreement to help the Greek and Swiss consortium secure a £ 385 million contract to build water and sewerage networks in two of Kazakhstan's largest cities, while working as a British trade envoy, and have stood for commission payments worth  £ 4 million. The newspaper published an email from the Duke to Kazakhstan's emperor Kenges Rakishev (who allegedly mediated the sale of Prince Berkshire's house, Sunninghill Park), and claimed that Rakishev had arranged meetings for the consortium. After initially claiming the email was a forgery, Buckingham Palace sought to block the publication as a privacy violation. The palace firmly denied allegations that Duke had acted as a "fixer" who called the article "incorrect, defamatory and violating the editor's ethical code."

Former minister of the Foreign Ministry, MP Chris Bryant stated: "When I was in the Foreign Office, it was very difficult to see in the interests of whom he [Duke] acted. He did not really add purity to the Royal diadem." There was a call for an official inquiry, the head of the Republican campaign group said "this seems to represent the abuse of Andrew's position as a trade envoy."

Friendship with Jeffrey Epstein

In March 2011, it was reported that Duke's friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, a man with confidence in the US for asking minors for prostitution, resulted in a "steady stream of criticism". Sarah, Duchess of York, revealed that Duke helped arrange for Epstein to pay part of his debt. The Duke walked publicly with Epstein after his release from prison, allegedly when negotiating this financial aid. In July 2011, Duke was reported to have severed all relations with Epstein, but in July 2011 the role of Duke as a Trade Ambassador was terminated.

In January 2015, there was a new media pressure for Buckingham Palace to explain Duke's relationship with Epstein. Peter Oborne, writing in The Daily Telegraph in January 2015, stated that "the facts proved quite bleak. What did the prince, in the first place, with Epstein, a pedophile imprisoned in 2008 to ask the girl -a young girl for underage prostitution? "

Election to Royal Society

The election of Andrew to the Royal Society encouraged "eminent British scientists" to "rebel" because of Andrew's lack of scientific background, with some notes he had only a secondary school education. In an op-ed at The Sunday Times, Humboldt Prize recipient David Colquhoun argued, in reference to Andrew's qualification that "if I want a 14.30 winning tip at Newmarket I will ask a king. another big question, I will not. "

Sexual abuse allegations

In January 2015, Virginia Roberts made allegations of sexual disloyalty against Duke in court letters relating to civil actions in Florida arising from Epstein's affairs, but where the Duke is not a party. Roberts claims that Duke is among men, including "ex-prime minister" and Alan Dershowitz, who had sex with him when he was a teenager. He accused him of being first introduced and, for Ã, £ 10,000, having sex with Duke on his way to London in 2001, when he was 17 years old (who was above the age of consent in England), and again in New York where the age of consent is 17). Flight records showed Duke and Virginia Roberts were in the same place when he alleged that sex happened. The Duke and Roberts were also photographed along with Duke's arm round Roberts waist. Roberts says he is pressured to have sex with Duke and "will not dare to object" and is afraid to leave, because he feels Epstein, through contact, can make him "killed or kidnapped". The allegations, as early as 2015, have not been tested in any court, but Roberts has repeated the charges against the Duke and against Epstein in a sworn lawyer's declaration under the penalty of perjury.

Buckingham Palace stated that "any suggestion of impropriety with minors is incorrect categorically", then repeats the rejection. The lawyer for Roberts claimed a request to Duke for a statement under oath of allegations it was returned without answer. Subsequently, when Duke was asked if he planned to answer under oath, he refused to answer and left the room. The American government may also try to prevent the Duke from having to testify under oath.

Dershowitz said, "he lied about me... he should not believe about anyone else... it should be considered all his accusations against Prince Andrew is wrong too." Dershowitz started a legal process that went against the charge and he and Epstein sued lawyers representing Roberts. In response, Virginia Roberts stated that he would not be "humiliated back into silence."

On April 7, 2015, Judge Kenneth Marra ruled that "allegations of sex committed against Prince Andrew in court documents filed in Florida must be attacked from public records". Marra made no decision whether Roberts' claim was right or wrong, specifically stating that Roberts would be able to provide evidence when the case was brought to justice.

Meeting with Ilham Aliyev

In November 2014, the Duke met Ilham Aliyev, president of Azerbaijan, on 12 separate occasions. He must resign as a trade envoy to Britain in 2011 after controversy over his friendship with Aliyev, who has been criticized for corruption and human rights abuses by Amnesty International, but he has continued to visit him in Azerbaijan since his establishment.

Arms sales

In March 2011, Kaye Stearman from Campaign Against Arms Trade told Channel 4 News CAAT to see Prince Andrew as part of a bigger problem, "He is the front man for UKTI.Our concern is not only Prince Andrew, it is all UKTI they formed seeing weapons as just another commodity but having a highly disproportionate resource. In London UKTI's arm sector office has more staff than others put together. We fear Prince Andrew used to sell weapons, and where you sell weapons, the weapon is probably a regime who is a cheerleader for the weapons industry, shakes hands and paves the way for the sellers. "

In January 2014 Prince Andrew took part in a delegation to Bahrain. CAAT spokesman Andrew Smith said: "We call on Prince Andrew and the British government to stop arms sales to Bahrain By authorizing the Bahraini dictatorship, Prince Andrew provides implicit support for their oppressive practice. When our government sells the weapon, providing moral and practical support to the unlawful and authoritarian regimes and directly support their systematic crackdown on opposition groups. (...) We should not allow our international image to be used as a PR tool for a cruel and oppressive dictatorship in Bahrain. "

Andrew Smith also said, "Prince has consistently used his position to promote arms sales and improve some of the most unpleasant governments in the world, his arms sales not only provide military support to the corrupt and repressive regimes of their regime of political and international legitimacy.
