A scribbling knob or scribe is a handheld used to cut a groove in a sheet of material. The tip of the spear of the knife is often made of hard materials such as tungsten carbide.
The scoring blade is pulled across the material in a straight line (with the aid of a parallel ruler), creating scratches or scores in the sheet. The material can then be broken or cut along the groove, producing a straight and smooth cut.
Scoring knives can be used to cut various materials, including glass, tiles, plexiglas, and other hard materials. For a softer material such as plexiglas, a razor blade can be used as a valuation tool.
