Trichoptilosis (from Greek ????? - tricho - "hair" and New Latin settings ptilosis "in certain areas" from the Greek ?????? ptilon "feather"), schizotrichia , and informally split ends , is the split or fraying of the hair -poros due to excessive heat and mechanical stress.

Cause
Thermal, chemical or mechanical stress may cause branched ends. For example, the use of curling irons and other heat treatments can lead to branched head ends. Excessive application of hair products such as perms and hair coloring may flex the protective layer from the outside of the hair shaft and weaken the hair, making the hair prone to branch. Mechanical pressure includes pulling the comb by force through tangled hair and repeated combing. The splitting ends can be seen as symptoms of copper transport disruption such as Menkes disease and the occipital Horn syndrome. Rubbing hair toward the scalp does not cause the tip of the forked hair.

Treatment
There is no cure for branched hair outside the affected hair pruning.
Some products claim to heal the broken end by sealing the back end together.
Prevention
Reducing or eliminating causes will usually prevent the split ending. Trim the tip of the hair at least every 6 to 10 weeks can prevent the tip of the forked hair. Also, the hair with the highest risk for splitting can be removed.
