The Gordon House is a residence designed by the influential architect Frank Lloyd Wright, now located in Oregon Garden, in Silverton, Oregon. This is an example of Usonian Wright's vision for America. This is one of the last of the Wright-designed Usonian series as an affordable housing for American working class consumers, who - in 1939 - are considered to have an annual income of $ 5,000-6,000. This house is based on the design for a modern house commissioned by Life magazine in 1938.

Histori

The house was designed in 1957 for Evelyn and Conrad Gordon, and was completed in 1963 (four years after Frank Lloyd Wright's death). It was originally located near Wilsonville, Oregon, located to take advantage of the adjacent Willamette River view on the west side and Mount Hood to the east. After the death of Evelyn Gordon in 1997, the house was sold to new owners David and Carey Smith, who wanted to tear it down to make room for a larger and more contemporary structure. The Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy was involved in efforts to preserve the historic home, and in early 2001, they obtained a three-month reprieve to dismantle it, and transferred it to Oregon Garden, about 21 miles (34 km) southeast of its original location. The Conservancy received a proposal from the Oregon Garden Society, assisted by City of Silverton, to take over the move and re-install the house. The demolition began on March 9, 2001. The house was moved in four large sections, with the upper floors, containing two bedrooms and one bathroom, moved as a unit. Overall negligence requires improvement of fencing and roofing of buildings arranged by grants from the Architectural Foundation of Oregon and the Oregon Cultural Trust. A new foundation that replicates the original was built. The house was opened a year later as the only publicly accessible Frank Lloyd Wright home in the Pacific Northwest.

Description

With a floor area of 2,133Ã,²Ã,² (203 mÃ,²), this house has a 12 foot (366 cm) window and French glass doors in the living room and Wright's classic horizontal design and features connecting interior and exterior spaces. The second story has two bedrooms, each with its own private balcony. Designed on a 7-square-foot lattice, the house is visually attached to a mass of unbroken concrete blocks that form the walls of a small basement and kitchen and extends beyond the roofline, obscuring vents and large roof windows into the kitchen ( "workspace") below. The house is built of cedar and painted cinder block and continues the Wright tradition of a customized wooden latticework window grille known as engraving.

Gordon House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 22, 2004. It is maintained by the Gordon House Conservancy and is available for small meetings. When not booked, this house is available for public tours as a historic house museum.
