mac malware includes viruses, trojan horses, worms and other types of malware that affect macOS, Apple's current operating system for Macintosh computers. macOS (formerly Mac OS X and OS X) rarely suffer from malware or virus attacks, and is considered less vulnerable than Windows. There is a frequent release of system software updates to resolve the vulnerabilities. Utilities are also available to find and remove malware.

History

Early examples of MacOS malware include Leap (discovered in 2006, also known as Oompa-Loompa) and RSPlug (found in 2007).

An application called MacSweeper (2009) misleads users about malware threats to retrieve their credit card details.

Trojan MacDefender (2011) uses the same tactics, combined with popup displays.

In 2012, a worm known as Flashback appears. Initially, the computer was infected through a fake Adobe Flash Player install request, but then exploited a vulnerability in Java to install itself without user intervention. The malware forced Oracle and Apple to release bug fixes for Java to remove vulnerabilities.

Bit9 and Carbon Black reported by the end of 2015 that Mac malware had been more productive that year than ever, including:

  • Lamadai - Java vulnerability
  • Appetite - Trojan horses target government organizations
  • Coin Thieves - This steals your bitcoin sign-in credentials via the cracked AngryBird app

A trojan known as Keydnap first appeared in 2016, which puts a backdoor on the victim's computer.

Adware is also a problem on the Mac, with software like Genieo, released in 2009, inserting ads into web pages and changing user and search engine homepages.

Malware has also spread on Macs through Microsoft Word macros.

Ransomware

In March 2016 Apple closed the first ransomware attack targeted against Mac users, encrypting user confidential information. It's known as KeRanger. After completing the encryption process, KeRanger demanded that the victim pay a bitcoin (approximately US $ 400 at that time, approximately US $ 8,500 on May 15, 2018) for the user to recover their credentials.
