MIUI (which stands for MI U ser I nterface and pronounced as "Me You I" , a common abbreviation of the user interface word as "UI"), is the stock and aftermarket firmware for smartphones and tablet computers, developed by Xiaomi based on Google's Android operating system. MIUI includes features such as theme support.

Xiaomi has released various smartphones, all except Mi A1 which is preinstalled with the full version of MIUI. This includes various apps and features that are not available in MIUI aftermarket versions.

In addition to supporting smartphones and tablets in their homes, Xiaomi also offers MIUI to flash on other smartphone brands such as Samsung, Sony, HTC, BLU, OnePlus and Nexus.

On February 24, 2016, Xiaomi said that MIUI ROM has more than 170 million users worldwide, and is supported by more than 340 handsets.

Development

The original MIUI ROM is based on Android 2.2.x Froyo and was originally developed in Chinese by Chinese startup Xiaomi Tech. Xiaomi added a number of applications to improve the basic framework; it includes Notes, Backup, Music, and Gallery. MIUI used to be translated and ported to an unofficial version in other languages by independent developers and fan groups. There are still unofficial ports created but their popularity declined after Xiaomi released their own phones. Updates are usually provided over-the-air every Thursday (CST).

MIUI and Google Play Services

Google has had disputes with the Chinese government, and access to many Google services is blocked. MIUI is not shipped with Google Play Services in mainland China. However, Xiaomi has expanded its operations outside of China; MIUI releases for Android devices outside of mainland China have Google Play Services and Google Apps like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Play Store pre-installed and working just like on other Android devices. MIUI's global version is certified by Google.

Criticism and controversy

The MIUI kernel is proprietary, and violates the Linux GPL kernel. Due to criticism, source code for certain components was released to GitHub on October 25, 2013. Kernel sources for a limited number of devices, including Mi3, Mi4, MiNote, and Redmi 1S, were released in March 2015.

In the early days, MIUI was criticized for being visually similar to iOS, because, unlike Android stock and most Android skins at the time, it did not have an app drawer and chose to put all the icons on the homescreen, like iOS. Other similarities include application icons in uniform form, dialers and call interfaces, organization of Application settings, and visual display power off in the UI. The similarity is taken further by special themes and mod made by fans to make MIUI simulate iOS. Xiaomi has since lowered a little resemblance.

Since MIUI V4, based on Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, Xiaomi added a virus scanner engine from partner company Tencent (formerly of Kingsoft, whose CEO appears to be the same person) even though there are many users who oppose it. The removal method was published in Chinese forum MIUI, because the machine was not found to help.

Also during the development of MIUI V4, Xiaomi began to remove Google Mobile Services (GMS) from their ROMs due to Chinese government policies that emerged in response to Google's disagreement with the Chinese government. The government blocks access to all Google services on every platform, in mainland China, and all phones made for the Chinese market are requested not to permit the installation of the GMS. GMS are present in MIUI global variants, however.

To raise funds for the company, MIUI has its own online service from Xiaomi, including cloud services, paid themes and games (featuring MiCredit digital currency).
