History

Charles Deering Estate, located near Palmetto Bay, contains the Cutler Fossil Site where mammoths, sharp-toed tigers and California condor are among the many fossil records. This park stores archaeological evidence about where the Native Americans lived from the ground 10,000 years ago. Tequesta burial mounds were also found there. The area called Cutler Ridge has been called "Hunting Land" by some of the earliest Caucasian settlers in the area, circa 1825.

In the early 1900s, the Florida East Coast Railway extended south into what became known as Cutler, which is located near what is now Charles Deering Estate. Cutler then serves as a place where people who live in the undeveloped Homestead, Florida area to get their inventory.

In 1992, Hurricane Andrew landed near Cutler Ridge. The storm left the area in "almost total destruction". The dense vegetation near the coast and the development of densely populated subdivisions in the area is considered a factor that reduces the extent of the area affected by Andrew's flood damage. However, nearly every building is heavily damaged by wind, and Florida damage is estimated at $ 25 billion, the most expensive natural disaster in US history up to that time.

In May 2002, the Cutler Bay Steering Committee met to discuss the formation of city advisory committees, where the committee would advise on merging the Cutler Ridge area into the town of Cutler Ridge. The decision to join was driven in part by efforts to recover from Hurricane Andrew. The proposed merger boundaries include Southwest 184th Street to the north and southwest 216 and 224 streets to the south. In addition, the western boundary will include Turnpike, U.S. 1 and Southwest 112th Avenue and Biscayne Bay will serve as the eastern boundary.

In April 2005, members of the Charter committee saw more than a dozen names for the city, ranging from "Pine Ridge" and "Cutler Bay" to just "Cutler". They reduced the options to "Cutler Ridge" and "Old Cutler Bay". In November 2005, voters approved the charter and selected the name "Cutler Bay" for a municipality of 35 districts above "Cutler Ridge" with votes from 1,920 to 1,403. In the months after the name change, many of those who were born and raised in areas known as Cutler Ridge since the 1870s refused to accept the new name.
