Magnetic water treatment (also known as anti-scale magnetic treatment or AMT ) is a method that should reduce the effects of hard water by passing it through the magnetic field as non-chemical alternatives for water softening. Magnetic water treatment is considered unproven and unscientific.

Lack of well-researched laboratory data, mechanistic explanations, and documented field studies to support their effectiveness. The wrong conclusions about their efficacy are based on applications with uncontrolled variables. Nevertheless, some studies have claimed a significant effect and proposed possible mechanisms for the observed decrease in the water scale.

Effectiveness

Vendors of magnetic water treatment devices often use images and testimony to support their claims, but eliminate quantitative detail and well-controlled studies. Advertising and promotion generally eliminate system variables, such as corrosion results or mass system equilibrium analysis, as well as post-treatment water treatments such as the concentration of violent ions or the distribution, structure, and morphology of suspended particles.

The hypothesized mechanism

Duration of exposure and field strength, gradient, rate of change, and orientation along or perpendicular to various flows are cited as important for results. Magnetic water treatment leader Klaus Kronenberg proposes that the soluble molecular forms of solute are modified by a strong magnetic field, leading them to precipitate as round or round crystals rather than deposits as sheets or platelets from hard crystals. Simon Parsons of the School of Water Sciences at Cranfield University proposed that magnetic fields reduce surface load on small particles, increasing the tendency to coagulate as large particles that stick with the flow rather than hoard as a scale. However, an internal study in 1996 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory found no difference in the preferred crystal structure of the scale stored in the magnetic water treatment system.

Liu et al. and Coey and Cass published research in 2010 and 2000 that reported that magnetic treatment led to mineralized water to support the formation of a more soluble calcium carbonate (aragonite than calcite).

Pipe material

The effect of magnetic treatment depends on the properties of the pipe. The magnitude of the effects depends on the conductivity of the pipe and the surface roughness.

Related devices

There are non-chemical related devices based on various physical phenomena that have been marketed for over 50 years with similar claims of scale inhibition. While some are effective, such as electrolytic devices, most do not work.

  • Electrolysis: Electrolytic inhibitors - two metals such as copper and zinc are used
  • Electrostatic: Electronic water cooler
  • Electromagnetic: fluctuating electromagnetic fields created
  • Catalytic
  • Mechanical
  • Other devices incorporate these different methods

Other uses of magnetic devices:

  • Two studies have shown a statistically significant decrease in dental calculus formation when exposed to magnetically processed water (compared to normal water) with oral irrigators.
  • Magnetic fuel savers are similar magnetic devices that are marketed as fuel-efficient, but have no effect, because hydrocarbon fuels do not have enough electrical resistance and conductivity and are not susceptible to magnetic attraction.
