Nubuck (pronounced ) is an upscale cow leather that has been sanded or rubbed on the side of the grain, or outside, to provide a short nap of short protein fibers, producing a surface like velvet. It is wear resistant, and may be white or colored.
Nubuck is similar to a suede, but is made from the outer side of the skin, giving it more strength and thickness and fine grain. Generally more expensive than suede, and should be dyed or dyed heavy to cover the sanding process and stamping.
Nubuck's characteristic is similar to aniline skin. It's soft to touch, easily scratched, and water becomes dark for a while (dries to its original color).
The word nubuck may come from new buck (skin) .
