Plot

In Cape Town, South Africa, a former CIA NOC operation turned into an international criminal Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) acquired data storage device from the mischievous MI6 agent Alec Wade (Liam Cunningham). After the couple was attacked by a mercenary team led by Vargas (Fares Fares), Wade was killed and Frost cornered by armed men, so he had no choice but to surrender himself to the American consulate.

Frost was transferred to a local storage house run by "housekeeper" Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds), a young agent at his first low-level CIA post. The CIA sent a team led by veteran agent Daniel Kiefer (Robert Patrick) to interrogate Frost and bring him back to the United States. Weston watched uneasily as Kiefer and his men soaked Frost. When the power to the house is safely cut, the CIA team realizes that they are in grave danger. Vargas and the heavily armed group attacked the hiding house, killing Kiefer and his team. Weston escapes, taking Frost as his responsibility. Weston made contact with his superior, David Barlow (Brendan Gleeson), at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, with Catherine Linklater (Vera Farmiga), the operator responsible for interrogating Frost and Kiefer's boss, and CIA Deputy Director Harlan Whitford (Sam Shepard) , which oversees the operation. Linklater ordered Weston to lie and wait for further instructions.

Frost immediately began to manipulate Weston while they were hiding, insisting that someone in the CIA submit their location to mercenaries and that Weston would be the one who was forced to fall if something went wrong, warning him to be wary of the words "We'll take him from here". Weston hides with Frost and calls his girlfriend Ana Moreau (Nora Arnezeder), a French medical resident who does not know that he works for the CIA, and tells him to leave the house. Barlow then tells Weston to go to the Cape Town Stadium to pick up a GPS device with another safe house location nearby. He took the GPS in the stadium, but Frost created the diversion and escaped by disguising himself as a policeman. Weston, who was detained by police, fled but was forced to shoot the police when they tried to catch him again. Weston went on to retake Frost but Frost paralyzed him and aimed to kill, only to shoot next to Weston's head and say, "I just killed the professionals".

Weston contacted Langley and told Barlow and the others about Frost's escape. Linklater ordered him to visit the nearest American embassy for debriefing after hearing that Weston was shooting at the police. When Whitford told him, "We'll take it from here.", Weston decides to pursue Frost himself. He meets with Ana and reveals that he is a CIA agent, telling him to return to Paris for his safety.

Linklater and Barlow were ordered to go to South Africa to pursue Frost. On the way, Linklater points out that Weston has joined Frost, which Barlow denied. Weston tracks Frost to a slum town in Langa, where Frost meets Nicaragua's Carlos Villar (RubÃÆ' Â © n Blades), a contact forgery and old documents. Vargas and his team attack again, killing Villar with his wife, but Frost avoids him and his men with the help of Weston. Weston brutally interrogated one of Vargas's wounded mercenaries, who revealed that Vargas was working for the CIA, which was trying to retrieve the storage devices Frost received from Wade.

As they bandage their wounds, Frost tells the story of how he was forced to kill the air traffic controller while on a mission, after being told he helped smuggle weapons. He later learned that the man was innocent, and that he was just part of a plot to kill a rapporter who would expose the network by the CIA. Frost tells Weston he is continuing his career and eventually becomes naughty just because he is good at it, and urges Weston not to kill innocent people. Weston took Frost to a new safe house, where Weston made the housekeeper, Keller (Joel Kinnaman) at gunpoint, believing he no longer knew if he could trust the CIA.

Keller attacked Weston, and after a brutal struggle, Weston broke Keller's neck, but he was seriously injured in the fight. Frost revealed the device contained Israeli intelligence covering details of corrupt officials and secret money transfers involving the American CIA, the British MI6, and other intelligence services; Weston recognizes references to Mossad because the CIA accuses Frost of selling secrets to them before he becomes a malicious agent. Frost left Weston, who came out of his wounds. Meanwhile, Linklater arrives in South Africa and tells Barlow about the existence of the device, but not its content. Barlow then kills him and goes to the hiding house where he reveals that he is Vargas's employer. He insists that the file contains incriminating evidence against him, and prompted Weston to lie about what had happened. Frost returns and kills Vargas and his men but is shot by Barlow. Weston then shot Barlow in the chest, killing him. Frost gave Weston the file and told Weston that he was better off before he died of his wounds.

Back in the United States, Weston met with Director Whitford, who told Weston that the unattractive facts about the CIA should be removed from his report but that he would be promoted. He asks Weston about the location of the file but Weston denies having been told about it by Frost. Whitford stated that whoever owns the files will have many enemies. Weston assured Whitford that he would "take it from here", looked shaky Whitford, and left. He leaked files to the media, incriminating personnel from many intelligence agencies, including Whitford. Later, Weston had tracked Ana down in Paris. He sent a message to her as she sat at a cafe across the street. He read the letter, looked up at Weston, and smiled.
