Father's Day is a celebration of honoring fathers and celebrating the role of father, father bond, and father's influence in society. In Catholic Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 (St. Joseph's Day) since the Middle Ages. This celebration was brought by Spain and Portugal to Latin America, where March 19 is often still used for it, although many countries in Europe and America have adopted the US date, which is the third Sunday of June. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most often in March, April and June. This completes a similar celebration that honors family members, such as Mother's Day, Siblings Day, and Grandpa's Day.

History and traditions

Initial history

A customary day for fathers celebrations in Catholic Europe is known to date back to at least the Middle Ages, and it was observed on March 19, as the feast of Saint Joseph, called the father of Nutritor Domini ("Lord of the Lord") in Catholic and "alleged father of Jesus" in the southern European tradition. This celebration was brought to America by Spain and Portugal, and in Latin America, Father's Day is still celebrated on 19 March. The Catholic Church actively supports the habits of the festivals on the day of St. Joseph of the later years of the 14th century or from the beginning of the fifteenth century, apparently on the initiative of the Franciscans.

In the Coptic Church, the celebration of fatherhood is also observed on St. Joseph, but the Copts celebrated this celebration on July 20th. This Coptic celebration probably dates from the 5th century.

In the United States

Beginning

Father's Day is not celebrated in the US, outside of Catholic tradition, until the 20th century. As a civil celebration in the US, it was unveiled in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day by celebrating father and parenting.

After the successful promotion of Ms. Anna's Day in Grafton, West Virginia, the first "Father's Day" celebration was held on July 5, 1908, at Fairmont, West Virginia, at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as the Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton was mourning her father's loss, when in December 1907, Monongah Mine Disaster near Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving behind a thousand orphans. Clayton suggested that pastor Robert Thomas Webb honor all their fathers.

Clayton's incident had no impact outside Fairmont for several reasons, including: the city was overwhelmed by other events, the celebration was never promoted outside the city itself and no announcement was made by the city council. Also, two events overshadowed this event: Independence Day celebrations July 4, 1908, with 12,000 attendants and several events including a hot air balloon event, which took over the headlines in the following days, and the death of 16-year-old girl on July 4. Churches and local councils are overwhelmed and they do not even think of promoting the event, and it has not been celebrated for years. His original preaching was not reproduced by the press and it was lost. Finally, Clayton is a quiet person, who never promotes the event and never talks to anyone about it.

Failed attempts to build Father's Day

In 1911, Jane Addams proposed that Father's Day celebrations in the city be held in Chicago, but he was denied.

In 1912, there was a Father's Day celebration in Vancouver, Washington, suggested by Methodist J.J. Berringer from Irvington Methodist Church. They mistakenly believe that they were the first to celebrate such a day. They followed the 1911 recommendation by Portland Oregonian .

Harry C. Meek, a member of Lions Clubs International, claimed that he first came up with the idea for Father's Day in 1915. Meek said that the third Sunday of June was chosen because it was his birthday. The Lions Club has given it the name "The Creator of Father's Day". Meek made a lot of effort to promote Father's Day and make it an official holiday.

Holiday formation

On June 19, 1910, the Father's Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. His father, William Jackson Smart's civil war veteran, is a single parent who raised six of his children there. He is also a member of the Old Centenary Presbyterian Church (now the Presbyterian Church of Knox), where he first proposed the idea. After hearing the sermon on Jarvis' Mother's Day in 1909 at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church, he told his pastor that fathers should have the same holiday in their honor. Although he originally proposed June 5, the birthday of his father, the priests did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was suspended on the third Sunday of June. Some local pastors accepted the idea, and on June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day, "sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city".

However, in 1920, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and faded into relative obscurity, even in Spokane. In the 1930s, Dodd returned to Spokane and began promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at the national level. He gets help from those trade groups who benefit most from the holidays, such as tie makers, tobacco pipes, and traditional gifts for fathers. In 1938, he received the help of the Father's Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men's Clothing Retailer to consolidate and systematize the commercial holiday promotion. Americans rejected holidays for the first few decades, viewing them as nothing more than an attempt by merchants to replicate Mother's Day commercial success, and newspapers often display cynical and sarcastic attacks and jokes. However, traders say it remains tough and even put this attack into their ads. In the mid-1980s, the Father's Day Board wrote, "(...) [Father's Day] has become the Second Christmas for all men's gift-oriented industries."

A bill for national recognition of the feast was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak on Father's Day and he wanted to make it an officially recognized federal holiday, but Congress refused , fearing that it would be commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day would be observed across the nation, but he paused to issue a national proclamation. Two previous attempts to officially recognize the holiday have been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Senator Maine, Margaret Chase Smith wrote a Father's Day proposal accusing Congress of neglecting dad for 40 years while respecting mothers, so "[choose] only one of our two parents". In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, appointing the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

In addition to Father's Day, International Men's Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19th to honor non-dad men and boys.

Spelling

In the United States, Dodd used "Father Day" to spell on his original petition for the holidays, but the spelling "Father's Day" was used in 1913 when the bill was introduced to the US Congress as the first attempt to set a holiday, and it was still spelled the same way when its creators were hailed in 2008 by the US Congress.

German

In Germany, Father's Day ( Vatertag ) is celebrated differently from other parts of the world. It is always celebrated on the Ascension Day (Thursday forty days after Easter), which is a federal holiday. Regionally, it's also called men's day, MÃÆ'¤nnertag , or men's day, herrentag . This is a tradition for boy groups (young and old but usually excluding pre-teen adolescents) to do a hiking tour with one or more smaller carriages, Bollerwagen, drawn by manpower. Inside the cart is a wine or bottle of beer (by region) and traditional regional food, Hausmannskost . Many men use this vacation as a chance to get drunk. According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, alcohol-related traffic accidents multiplied by three on this day. The tradition of Father's Day is especially prevalent in East Germany.

These traditions may be rooted in the Christian Ascension Day procession to farmland, which has been celebrated since the 18th century. People will sit on wooden carts and take them to the village square, and the mayor will reward the father who has the most children, usually a large piece of ham. By the end of the nineteenth century the religious component was increasingly lost, especially in urban areas such as Berlin, and groups of men organized walks with beer and ham. In the 20th century, alcohol consumption has become a major part of the tradition.
