" The Robbery " is the third episode of NBC's first season sitcom Seinfeld .

It was premiered as the third episode of the season on June 7, 1990. It was written by Matt Goldman, therefore making this the first episode of Seinfeld not written by the show's creators: Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David.

In that episode, Jerry leaves Elaine in charge of her apartment as she goes on tour. When he returned, he found the apartment had been robbed after Kramer left the front door open. While Kramer promised to find the robber, George offered him a chance to move into a much better apartment - a move he received, allowing Elaine to move in Jerry's apartment and away from her irritating roommate, Tina.

Plot

Jerry goes to do some stand-ups in Minneapolis, leaving Elaine to look after her apartment. Elaine has a problem with an annoying roommate, Tina, who is a "Waitress/Actress" hoping for a role, and asks George if she can find new accommodation for her. He then tried to persuade Jerry to give his current apartment, with George offering Jerry a new apartment on West Street 83 by Central Park that he thought was great, but Jerry canceled the offer. When Jerry returned he found the apartment had been burglarized because Kramer left the front door open by mistake. As a way of making up, Kramer promised to find items stolen from Jerry.

After the robbery, Elaine still asks Jerry to give her apartment. Jerry decided to look around the new apartment first. The apartment was great and Jerry took it, letting Elaine move into the old apartment. Jerry will sign the apartment lease, but George tells him that if he has second thoughts, he should not take it. This caused him to think that George might want a new apartment for himself. Both have arguments that result in both not wanting to move. They gamble for the apartment and Jerry wins. Meanwhile, Kramer claims that he thinks he knows where things are stolen by Jerry, and suspects an Englishman along the denying alley who has "stuff" on him.

Later in Monk's Cafà ©  ©, Jerry is back on the deal and decides not to take his place because George wants it. The two continue to argue over who should have it, and decide that none of them should take it. A waitress, Carolyn, played by Anita Wise, overhears it and George offers the place to her, which she receives. The waiter invited them and Elaine to her house, but it was clear that Jerry, George, and Elaine did not enjoy it. They heard two people talking about another person coming out of their apartment, who all asked what the rental was.

Production

"The Robbery" was written by Matt Goldman, a firstimer, therefore making this first episode not written by Seinfeld or David and the only one not written by Seinfeld and David for this season, and directed by Tom Cherones, during the course of the first production season. The idea for this episode was inspired by Seinfeld's own experience of his robbed apartment when he was a student, though rather than the door that was unlocked as in the episode, the thief broke through the wall. Co-creator of the Larry David series was given a $ 20,000 bonus by Castle Rock and was promoted to executive producer for his work on the episode. During the episode shooting, earthquakes struck the set, but no one was hurt.

This episode is the first to mention the character of Tina, an actress friend of Elaine's, although she did not appear in this episode. This is also the first episode featuring Kramer making a sliding door to Jerry's apartment, which became a trademark in all subsequent episodes. Carolyn the waitress, played by Anita Wise, and her husband, Larry, were named after sister and brother-in-law Seinfeld himself.

In the original manuscript manuscript, the Englishman is called "Berbick." In the same script, Elaine asks Jerry what happened between Kramer and the Englishman. Jerry replied, "Kramer lives there for three hours, they're like good friends now."

However, Colin Jacobson for the DVD Movie Guide says, "It has no great banter and games that mark the best episodes, but it does not come across as useless. It seems a bit uninspired in the bigger scheme."
