Type of home improvement
While "home improvement" often refers to building projects that change the structure of existing homes, it can also include improvements to lawns, gardens, and outdoor structures, such as gazebos and garages. It also includes maintenance, repairs, and general service tasks. Home improvement projects generally have one or more of the following objectives:
Convenience
- Enhances heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
- Upgrade your room with luxury items, such as adding a gourmet feature to the kitchen or spa hot tub to the bathroom.
- Increase the capacity of pipes and electrical systems.
- Waterproofing basement.
- Soundproofed rooms, especially bedrooms and bathrooms.
Maintenance and repair
The maintenance project may include:
- Roof tear and replace.
- Replacement or new construction window.
- Repair concrete and couple into foundation and chimney.
- Reboot rooms, walls, or fences
- Repair pipes and electrical systems.
Additional space
Additional living space can be added by:
- Turning marginal areas into liveable spaces such as converting basements into sitting rooms, home theaters, or home offices - or attics to a spare room.
- Expanding one's home with rooms added to one's home side or, sometimes, an additional level to the original roof. Like a new construction unit called "add-on".
Save energy
Homeowners can reduce utility costs by:
- Energy-saving thermal insulation, replacement windows, and lighting.
- Renewable energy with biomass pellet stoves, wood burning stoves, solar panels, wind turbines, programmable thermostats, and geothermal heat exchange pumps (see autonomous buildings).
Safety and preparedness
Emergency preparedness safety measures such as:
- Home fire alarm system and burglar.
- Fire spraying system to protect the house from fire.
- Security doors, windows, and window coverings.
- Storm warehouse for protection from tornadoes and hurricanes.
- Bombing shelters mainly during the 1950's as protection from nuclear war.
- Generator backup to provide power during power outage.

Home improvement industry
Home or residential renovation is a nearly $ 300 billion industry in the United States, and a $ 48 billion industry in Canada. The average cost per project is $ 3,000 in the United States and $ 11,000-15,000 in Canada.
Repairs of the ancient professional house and back to the beginning of recorded civilization. One such example is Sergius Orata, who in the 1st century BC. It is said by the author Vitruvius (in his famous book De architectura) has discovered a hypocaust. Hypocaust is a under-floor heating system used throughout the Roman Empire in the villas of the rich. He is said to have become rich by himself by buying a villa for a bargain price, adding newly discovered spa and hypocaust, and selling it back for a higher price.
Renovation Contractor
Perhaps the most important or visible professionals in the renovation industry are renovation contractors or skilled trades. These are builders that have special credentials, permissions and experience to perform renovation services in certain cities.
Despite the existence of a large, unlicensed 'gray market' company, some have membership in associations that are reputable and/or accredited by professional organizations. Homeowners are advised to carry out checks such as verifying licenses and insurance and checking business references before hiring contractors to work in their homes.
In popular culture
Home improvements were popularized on television in 1979 with this premiere of Old House starring Bob Vila on PBS. The American cable channel HGTV features many self-made events, just like the DIY Network channel. Danny Lipford hosts and produces a nationwide syndicate of today's Homeowners with Danny Lipford . Tom Kraeutler and Leslie Segrete co-hosted the nationally syndicated Pit Money Improvement Show .
Movies that mock the difficulties involved include: Mr. Blandings Building his Dream Home (1948), starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy; George Washington Slept Here (1942), featuring Jack Benny and Ann Sheridan; and The Money Pit (1986), with Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. Sitcom Home Improvement uses home improvement themes for comedy purposes.
