Xbox 360 is a home video game console developed by Microsoft. As the original Xbox successor, this is the second console in the Xbox series. It competes with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. It was officially introduced on MTV on May 12, 2005, with a detailed launch and game information being announced later that month at the E3 2005 exhibition.

Xbox 360 has an online service, Xbox Live, which extends from previous iterations on the original Xbox and receives regular updates over the lifetime of the console. Available in subscription-free and free varieties, Xbox Live allows users to: play online games; download games (via Xbox Live Arcade) and game demos; buy and stream music, television programs and movies via Xbox Music and Xbox Video portals; and access third party content services through streaming media applications. In addition to online multimedia features, it allows users to stream media from a local PC. Several devices have been released, including wireless controllers, expanded hard drive storage, and Kinect motion sensing cameras. The launch of these additional services and peripherals helps the Xbox brand evolve from a mere game to cover all the multimedia, turning it into a leisure entertainment hub of spaces.

Launched worldwide in 2005-2006, the Xbox 360 initially lacked supply in many areas, including North America and Europe. The earliest version of the console underwent a high failure rate, indicated by the so-called "Red Ring of Death", which requires an extension of the device's warranty period. Microsoft released two redesigned console models: Xbox 360 S in 2010 and Xbox 360 E in 2013. As of June 2014, 84 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide, making it the video game console with the sixth highest selling in history, and the best-selling consoles made by American companies. Although not the best-selling console of its generation, Xbox 360 is considered by TechRadar as the most influential through its emphasis on digital media distribution and multiplayer games on Xbox Live.

The successor of Xbox 360, Xbox One, was released on November 22, 2013. On April 20, 2016, Microsoft announced that it would end the production of new Xbox 360 hardware, although the company would continue to support the platform.

History

Development

Known during development as Xbox Next, Xenon, Xbox 2, Xbox FS or NextBox, Xbox 360 was conceived in early 2003. In February 2003, planning for the Xenon software platform began, and led by Microsoft Vice President J Allard. That month, Microsoft held an event for 400 developers in Bellevue, Washington to recruit support for the system. Also that month, Peter Moore, former president of Sega of America, joined Microsoft. On August 12, 2003, ATI signed to produce a graphics processing unit for the new console, an agreement announced publicly two days later. Before the launch of the Xbox 360, some Alpha development tools were seen using Apple Power Mac G5 devices. This is because the PowerPC 970 processor that runs the same PowerPC architecture as the Xbox 360 will eventually run under the IBM Xenon processor. Xenon processor core was developed using a slightly modified version of the APE architecture of the PlayStation 3 Processor Cells. According to David Shippy and Mickie Phipps, IBM employees "hide" their work from Sony and Toshiba, IBM's partners in developing Cell Processors. Jeff Minter created the Neon music visualization program that came with the Xbox 360.

Launch

Xbox 360 was released on November 22, 2005, in the United States and Canada; December 2, 2005, in Europe and December 10, 2005, in Japan. Then launched in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Russia. In its first year on the market, the system was launched in 36 countries, more countries than any other console launched in a year.

Critical reception

In 2009, IGN named the Xbox 360 the sixth largest video game console of all time, from 25 fields. Although not the seventh generation bestseller console, Xbox 360 is considered by TechRadar as the most important. influential, emphasizing the distribution of digital media and online games via Xbox Live, and by popularizing the achievement of gaming achievements. PC Magazine considers the Xbox 360 as the prototype for online gaming as it "proves that the online gaming community can thrive in the console room". Five years after the original Xbox 360 debut, Kinect's well-received motion capture camera was released, setting a record for being the fastest-selling consumer electronics device in history, and extending the life of the console. Edge rated the second best Xbox 360 console from the 1993-2013 period, stating "It has its own social network, cross-game chat, new indie games every week, and the best version of just about every multiformat game... Killzone is not Hello and currently Gran Turismo is not Forza , but this is not about exclusives - nothing beats PS3 output Naughty Dog, however, is about Microsoft's choice being reinvented in the original Xbox era.Clear-like architecture means the initial EA Sports game runs at 60fps compared to just 30 on the PS3, Xbox Live means that every dedicated player has a list of existing friends, and Halo means Microsoft has an exclusive new generation of killers, and when developers demonstrate games on PC now they do it with 360 pads - another industry benchmark, and what matters. "

Sales

The Xbox 360 started production only 69 days before launch, and Microsoft could not provide enough systems to meet early consumer demand in Europe or North America, sold out after it was released in all regions except in Japan. Forty thousand units offered for sale on eBay auction sites during the first week of release, 10% of the total supply. By the end of the year, Microsoft has sent 1.5 million units, including 900,000 in North America, 500,000 in Europe, and 100,000 in Japan.

In May 2008 Microsoft announced that 10 million Xbox 360s had been sold and it was the "first generation gaming console at this time" to surpass the 10 million mark in the US. In the US, the Xbox 360 is a leader in the sales of home-based home consoles today until June 2008, when it was exceeded by the Wii. Xbox 360 has sold a total of 870,000 units in Canada on August 1, 2008. Between January 2011 and October 2013, Xbox 360 is the best-selling console in the United States for 32 consecutive months.

In Europe, the Xbox 360 has sold seven million units on November 20, 2008, according to Microsoft. In the United Kingdom, Xbox 360 has sold 3.9 million units as of June 27, 2009, according to GfK Chart-Track.

While the original Xbox sold poorly in Japan, selling just 2 million units while on the market (between 2002 and 2005), the Xbox 360 sold out worse, selling only 1.5 million units from 2005 to 2011. Edge < i> magazine reported in August 2011 that initially did not get excited and then fell sales in Japan, where Microsoft can not make serious inroads into the dominance of domestic rivals Sony and Nintendo, has caused retailers to decrease and in some cases halt Xbox 360 sales completely. The significance of bad Japanese sales may be exaggerated in the media compared to overall international sales.

Legacy

The Xbox 360 sells much better than its predecessor, and although it is not the seventh generation bestseller console, it is considered a success as it strengthens Microsoft as a major force in the console market at the expense of its established competitors. Cheap Nintendo Wii does sell the most console units but has finally seen a fall in third-party software support in its final years, and has been viewed by some as a fad since the successful Wii U got a bad debut in 2012. PlayStation 3 fought for the time being too expensive and initially lacking quality games, making it much less dominant than its predecessor, the PlayStation 2, and it took until the end of the PlayStation 3 for sales and games to reach parity with the Xbox 360. TechRadar states that " Xbox 360 passes the stick as king of the hill - a position that puts all more pressure on its successor, Xbox One ".

Xbox 360's superiority over its competitors is due to the release of high-profile games from both the first-party and third-party developers. The 2007 Games Critics award honors the platform with 38 nominations and 12 wins - more than any other platform. As of March 2008, the Xbox 360 has reached the software attach rate of 7.5 games per console in the US; the figure was 7.0 in Europe, while its competitors were 3.8 (PS3) and 3.5 (Wii), according to Microsoft. At the 2008 Game Developer Conference, Microsoft announced that it expects more than 1,000 games available for Xbox 360 by the end of the year. As well as enjoying exclusives such as additions to the Halo franchise and Gears of War, the Xbox 360 has managed to get a simultaneous release of the game originally planned to be PS3 exclusive, including Devil May Cry 4 , Ace Combat 6 , Virtua Fighter 5 , Grand Theft Auto IV , Final Fantasy XIII Tekken 6 , Metal Gear Solid: Rising , and LA Noire . In addition, Xbox 360 versions of cross platform games are generally considered to be superior to their PS3 counterparts in 2006 and 2007, partly due to programming difficulties for the PS3.

TechRadar considers the Xbox 360 as the most influential game system through digital media distribution emphasis, Xbox Live online game service, and game achievement features. Over the lifetime of the console, the Xbox brand has grown from just a game to cover all the multimedia, turning it into a center for "living computing environments". Five years after the original Xbox 360 debut, the well-received Kinect motion capture camera was released, becoming the fastest consumer electronics device in history, and extending the life of the console.

Microsoft announced Xbox One, the successor of Xbox 360, on E3 on June 10, 2013. Despite being successful as Microsoft's main console by Xbox One, support from publishers for Xbox 360 is expected to continue until at least 2016. On April 20, 2016, Microsoft announced the end of device production hard new Xbox 360; the company will continue to provide hardware and software support for the platform, as the selected Xbox 360 game can be played on Xbox One.

Hardware

The main unit of the Xbox 360 itself has a double concave double in white or matte black. The official color of the white model is the Arctic Chill. It features a port on the top when vertical (left side when horizontal) to which a special-built hard disk drive unit can be attached.

On Slim and E models, where the hard drive is down when it is vertical (right side when horizontal) and requires opening a hidden door to access it. (This does not void the warranty.) The Xbox 360 Slim/E hard drive is a standard 2.5 "SATA laptop drive, but has a special enclosure and firmware so the Xbox 360 can recognize it.

Technical specifications

Various hard disk drives have been produced, including options at 20, 60, 120, 250, or 320Ã, GB. Inside, the Xbox 360 uses an IBM triple-core Xenon designed as its CPU, with each core capable of processing two threads simultaneously, and therefore can operate on up to six threads at a time. Graphics processing is handled by ATI Xenos, which has 10 MB of eDRAM. The main memory pool is 512 MB.

Many accessories are available for the console, including wired and wireless controllers, faceplates for customization, headsets for chats, webcam for video chats, dance mats and Gamercize for workouts, three memory unit sizes and five hard drive sizes (20, 60, 120, 250 ( originally Japanese only, but later also available elsewhere) and 320 GB), among other items, all of which are styled to match consoles.

Kinect

Kinect is an "unrestrained gaming and entertainment experience" for the Xbox 360. It was first announced on June 1, 2009 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, under the codename, Project Natal . This enhancement enables users to control and interact with Xbox 360 without game controllers by using gestures, spoken commands, and objects and images presented. Kinect accessories are compatible with all Xbox 360 models, connected to new models through dedicated connectors, and older ones through a USB power adapter. During their CES 2010 keynote speech, Robbie Bach and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer went on to say that Kinect will be released during the holiday period (November-January) and work with every 360 consoles. The name and release date of November 4, 2010, was officially announced on June 13 of that year, prior to Microsoft's press conference on E3 2010.

Masalah teknis

Xbox 360 (not Slim and E models) has experienced a number of technical problems. Since the release of the console in 2005, users have reported concerns over its reliability and failure rate.

To help customers with broken consoles, Microsoft extended the Xbox 360 factory warranty up to three years for hardware failure issues that resulted in a "Common Hardware Failure" error report. A "General Hardware Failure" is recognized on all models released before the Xbox 360 S by three quadrants of the ring around the power button that flashes red. This error is often known as "Red Ring of Death". In April 2009 the warranty was extended to also include failures associated with E74 error codes. A warranty extension is not granted for other types of failures that do not generate this specific error code.

As this problem arises, Microsoft has attempted to modify the console to improve its reliability. Modifications include a reduction in the number, size, and placement of components, the addition of epoxy to the corners and edges of the CPU and GPU as a glue to prevent movement relative to the board during heat expansion, and a second GPU heatsink to dissipate more heat. With the release of the redesigned Xbox 360 S, the warranty for the newer model does not include a three-year extension coverage for "General Hardware Failure". The newer Xbox 360 S and E models show the system overheats when the console's power button starts flashing red, unlike previous models where the first and third quadrants of the ring will glow red around the power button if overheating occurs. The system will then alert the user of an upcoming system shutdown until the system has cooled down, while the flashing power switch between green and red is an indication of "General Hardware Failure" unlike the old model in which three of the quadrants will turn red.

Software

Games

Xbox 360 was launched with 14 games in North America and 13 in Europe. The best-selling console game for 2005, Call of Duty 2, sold over a million copies. The other five games sold over a million copies in the first year of the console on the market: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter , Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion , Dead or Live 4 , Saints Row , and Gears of War . Gears of War will be the best-selling game on the console with 3 million copies in 2006, before being exceeded in 2007 by Halo 3 with over 8 million copies.

Six games were initially available in Japan, while anticipated games such as Dead or Alive 4 and Enchanted Arms were released in the weeks following the launch of the console. Games targeted specifically for the region, such as Chromehounds , Nineties Nine , and Phantasy Star Universe , were also released in the first year of the console. Microsoft also gained support from Japanese developer Mistwalker, founded by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Mistwalker's first game, Blue Dragon , was released in 2006 and has a limited-edition sold-out bundle quickly with over 10,000 pre-orders. Blue Dragon is one of three Xbox 360 games that surpass 200,000 units in Japan, along with Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean: The Last Hope . The second game Mistwalker, Lost Odyssey also sold over 100,000 copies.

The 2007 Games Critics award rewards the Xbox 360 platform with 38 Nominations and 11 Victories. As of March 2008, the Xbox 360 has reached the software attach rate of 7.5 games per console - a record for every console in history.

Interface

The original Xbox 360 graphical user interface is Xbox 360 Dashboard ; a tabbed interface featuring five "Blades" (formerly four blades), and designed by AKQA and Audiobrain. It can be launched automatically when the console boot without a disk in it, or when the disk tray is removed, but the user has the option to choose what the console does if the game is in the tray when starting, or if it is inserted when it is on. The simplified version can also be accessed anytime via the Xbox Guide button in the gamepad. This simplified version shows the user's gamercard, Xbox Live messages and friends list. It also allows for personal and music settings, in addition to voice or video chats, or back to the Xbox Dashboard of the game.

On November 19, 2008, the Xbox 360 dashboard was changed from the "Blade" interface, to a reminder dashboard at that time in Zune and Windows Media Center, known as the "New Xbox Experience" or NXE.

Since the release of the console, Microsoft has released several updates for the Dashboard software. This update includes adding new features to the console, improving Xbox Live functionality and multimedia playback capabilities, adding compatibility for new accessories, and fixing bugs in the software. Such updates are required for users who want to use Xbox Live, as access to Xbox Live is disabled until updates are made.

New Xbox Experience

At E3 2008, at Microsoft's Show, Microsoft Aaron Greenberg and Marc Whitten announced a new Xbox 360 interface called "The New Xbox Experience" (NXE). The update is intended to facilitate navigation of the console menu. Its GUI uses the Twist UI, previously used in Windows Media Center and Zune. The new Xbox guide retains all Dashboard functions (including Marketplace browser and disc outlay) and the original "Blade" interface (though the color scheme has been changed to fit the NXE Dashboard).

NXE also provides many new features. Users can now install games from disk to hard drive to play them with less load time and less disk drive sound, but every game disc must remain inside the system in order to run. The new built-in Community System allows the creation of digital Avatar that can be used for various activities, such as sharing photos or playing Arcade games like 1 vs. 100 . The update was released on November 19, 2008.

While previous system updates have been stored on internal memory, the NXE update is the first to require storage devices - at least a 128 MB memory card or hard drive.

Microsoft released further updates to the Xbox 360 Dashboard starting December 6, 2011. This includes a completely new user interface that uses the Microsoft Metro design language, and adds new features such as cloud storage for storage and gaming profiles, live television broadcasts, Bing sounds search, access to YouTube videos and better support for Kinect voice commands.

Multimedia

The Xbox 360 supports video in Windows Media Video (WMV) format (including high definition video and PlaysForSure), as well as H.264 and MPEG-4 media. Dashboard update December 2007 added support for MPEG-4 ASP video playback. The console can also display pictures and perform photo slideshows with various transition effects, and supports audio playback, with music player controls accessible via the Xbox 360 Guide button. Users can play their own music while playing games or use the dashboard, and can play music with interactive visual synthesizers.

Music, photos and videos can be played from standard USB mass storage devices, exclusive Xbox 360 storage devices (such as memory cards or Xbox 360 hard drives), and servers or computers with Windows Media Center or Windows XP with Service 2 or higher in local area network in streaming mode. Because the Xbox 360 uses a modified version of the UPnP AV protocol, some alternative UPnP servers like uShare (part of the GeeXboX project) and MythTV can also stream media to Xbox 360, allowing for similar functionality from non-Windows servers. This is possible with video files up to HD resolution and with multiple codecs (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV) and container formats (WMV, MOV, TS).

On October 27th, 2009, UK and Ireland users can also access live streaming and Sky Sky television program requests.

In 2007, 2008 and 2009 Consumer Electronics Shows, Microsoft has announced that the IPTV service will soon be available for use via Xbox 360. In 2007, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates stated that IPTV on Xbox 360 is expected to be available to consumers. in the holiday season, using the Microsoft TV IPTV Edition platform. In 2008, Gates and president of Entertainment & amp; Robbie Bach's device announced a partnership with BT in the United Kingdom, where the advanced BT Vision TV service, using the newer Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV platform, will be accessible via Xbox 360, which is planned for mid-year. BT Vision DVR-based features will not be available on the Xbox 360 because of the limited hard drive capacity. In 2010, when it announced version 2.0 of Microsoft Mediaroom, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer mentioned that IPTV service U-verses AT & amp; T will allow the Xbox 360 to be used as set-top boxes by the end of the year. As of January 2010, IPTV on Xbox 360 has not been deployed outside of limited trials.

In 2012, Microsoft released the Live Event Player, allowing for events such as video game shows, beauty contests, awards events, concerts, news and sports events to stream on the console via Xbox Live. The first live event that was broadcast live was 2012 Revolver Golden Gods, Microsoft E3 2012 media briefing, and beauty contest Miss Teen USA 2012.

XNA Community

XNA Community is a feature where Xbox 360 owners can receive community-made games, created with Microsoft XNA Game Studio, from XNA Creators Club. These games are written, published, and distributed through community-managed portals. The XNA community provides channels for digital video delivery via Xbox Live that can be royalty free, publishers, and licenses. XNA game sales, however, did not meet original expectations. although Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG) has several "hits."

Xbox Live

When Xbox 360 was released, Microsoft's Xbox Live online game service was shut down for 24 hours and underwent major improvements, adding a non-subscription base service called Xbox Live Silver (later renamed Xbox Live Free) to its established premium subscription. based service (renamed Gold). Xbox Live Free is included with all console SKUs. It allows users to create user profiles, join on message boards, and access Microsoft Xbox Live Arcade and Marketplace and talk with other members. Game development

PartnerNet, an alternative developer Xbox Live network used by developers to download game beta content and games developed for Xbox Live Arcade, runs on Xbox 360 debugging tools, used both by developers and by the game press. In a podcast released on February 12, 2007, the developer violated NonNetLink's non-disclosure agreement (NDA) by commenting that it has found a playable version of Alien Hominid and an unplayable version of Ikaruga on PartnerNet. Some video game journalists, misinterpreting NDA violations as NDA cancellations, are immediately beginning to report other games being tested through PartnerNet, including remakes from Jetpac. ( Alien Hominid for Xbox 360 was released on February 28 that year, and Ikaruga was released over a year later on April 9, 2008.
