Mall of the Americas is a closed shopping center located on 7795 West Flagler Street next to the Palmetto Expressway in Miami, Florida. The major stores in the mall include Foot Locker, Old Navy, Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls, The Home Depot, and the offices of the Department of Highway Safety and Florida Motor Vehicles.

History

At its opening in 1970, it was known as the Midway Mall. The name change to Mall of the Americas took place in December 1987.

Former department store anchors include Richard's, Jefferson Ward and Woolco, all of which were closed in the 1980s. The Woolco store was converted in 1983 into a discount clothing store called Winston.

After falling to 30 percent occupancy, the mall was hired back to target Latin American middle-class customers. This renovation adds a discount anchor like Marshalls, plus L. Luria & amp; The Children and The Home Depot, the latter picking up the former Woolco after Winston closes. The mall was also renamed Mall of the Americas, and an eight-screen AMC multiplex cinema was added. Other notable tenants after rebuilding were the first Forever 21 clothing store outside the California chain of home bases. Other retailers now in the mall include Old Navy Outlet, Ross Dress for Less and AMC Theater 14 screens at the north end of the mall.

There is also the Santa Cruz Furniture Store on the 2nd floor at the southern end of the mall that opened in the 1980s to the mid-1990s because it was replaced by the TigerDirect office.

The Tico Clothing store was once on the north side of the mall in the 1980s until it was relocated to the south of the mall in the early 1990s when Home Depot expanded. In the mid-1990s, it was closed for the TigerDirect store to take over.

The Luria Jewelry and Gift Shop was closed in the mid-1990s at the south end of the mall and was replaced by Ross Dress for Less

Home Depot moved into a new stand-alone building in 2003. There is also a TigerDirect shop on the side of the mall occupied by Ross. In 2010, Tiger Direct outlets moved from the right of their corporate headquarters to the left, to allow direct mall access across Ross. The two secondary entrances to the mall have several mall type stores near them that also do not have mall access. In October 2015, it was announced that part of the northern wing of the mall would be demolished to make room for Costco Wholesale, who moved to the mall. As a result, the AMC Theater closes in December 2015. On June 1, 2016, the north wing of the mall has been demolished, and the newly built Costco building and gas station stand in place. By 2018, this mall faces an uncertain future.
