Synthetic fabrics are textiles made from artificial fibers rather than natural fibers.

Chemically produced fabrics are made by combining monomers into polymers, through a process called polymerization. The synthetic fabric, when enlarged, looks like a plastic spinning joint. Chemicals used to fabricate synthetic fabrics include sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide, derived from coal, oil, or natural gas. The pressure forces the liquid chemicals through a small hole called the spinneret. When the liquid comes out of the spinneret and into the air, it cools and forms small threads. Manufacturers add artificial coloring to these yarns before weaving them into fabric.

Synthetic fabrics have many different qualities - including some that can not be achieved with natural fibers. Synthetic fabrics can provide waterproof fabrics and elastic fabrics for swimsuits and pants. Depending on synthetic fabrics, a variety of additional chemicals can make it softer, wrinkle-free, fireproof, impermeable, stain resistant, or moth resistant. While all these qualities are desirable, the process can harm the environment, wildlife, and public health. Examples of synthetic fabrics are Nylon, Polyester, spandex.
