Bathtubs, built in 1967-1968, include large, rugged rectangular excavations into rocks surrounded by reinforced concrete walls, intended to serve as a dam to prevent water intrusion from the nearby Hudson River (North River). It closes almost all of the original World Trade Center. The World Trade Center site is located in a manmade blocked manhole that has accumulated over the centuries, extending the land to the Hudson River from the original Manhattan coastline, with a bedrock located 65 feet (20 m) below. Manually removing water from this area will greatly alter the water level around the World Trade Center site and thereby harm the foundation of nearby buildings, causing them to drown. This is why the Bathtub method is used.
The bathtub contains a 16 acre (65,000 m 2 ) site, including seven underground levels, the central terminal of the PATH fast transit route, and the pre-existing Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line IRT line in New York City ( 1 train). The World Trade Center's Southern Tower is actually built around a PATH tube passing through the foundation area, so service is not interrupted throughout the entire construction period. Problem
Once built, the bathtub wall relies on the presence of the basement WTC floor to provide lateral support. When these buildings were destroyed in part after the collapse of the Twin Towers during the September 11 attacks, it was feared that removing the resulting debris could weaken the walls and cause them to fail, endanger workers and possibly sacrifice other buildings and flood most of the subway systems. During restoration and cleansing operations, dangerous degradation of the walls is found, prompting emergency operations to install the tieback into the base stone to support the bathtub wall. The new Bathtub excavations were carried out between 2006 and 2008, with the new Bathtub reaching 85 feet (26 m) underground.
